En ruta al sur
It’s Sunday 11th May today and I arrived in Puerto Montt yesterday afternoon on a clear beautiful day, unusual for here. I think today is a bit more typical, overcast and a bit windy. In Temuco I had booked accommodation in Puerto Montt for Saturday 1pm. So I was determined to make it here in 2 and half days. It was Ruta cinco all the way, that generally means the going is not to bad. Cycled on into the dark and rode off 70 miles. That day I watched my speedometer as it turned 1000 miles.Next day I set off early, as I wanted to cycle 100 miles. Not bad, I made 95. Along the way I have been documenting fatalities of domestic animals and there was on fine example of a pussycat so I stopped to take a photo - that was until the poor thing raised its head and looked pleadingly at me. Its wee tummy was still slowly moving up and down. If a RSPCA type organization existed here I would have called. I’m sure they love their pets in Chile but I reckon if there is to be any charity here animals won’t even register. I could have bludgeoned it to death and put it out of its misery but my have caused more misery as bludgeoned suggests. Anyway I had to say good-bye and hoped it passed out soon. Cycled on into the night again and camped in the most awkward place yet. It was on a kind of island on a junction on the highway, it was late and I was quite knackered. Woke up with ice on my tent and freeing cold hands for the first 10 miles or so. The fog burned out and it was a marvelous day. Although my bum wasn’t thinking all was marvelous. I had developed a sore on me ass, pretty uncomfortable and my legs weren’t up to scratch after yesterday’s excursion. But after a bit of a slog I made it to Puerto Montt by 2pm. Now I can rest my bum and learn some Spanish and do a bit of brush craft.
