Volcano Calbuco

I’ve have been in Puerto Monnt quite a few days now. I missed the last ferry to Puerto Chacabuco as I was climbing a volcano. I need to wait for the next one on Sunday. I have decided to set off down the island of Chiloe tomorrow morning (Thurs) and return to P Montt Saturday evening, in time to organize my ferry trip.

I met Torsten, a Social Worker from Hamburg, while drinking coffee at Claudio’s coffee/compeltos stall. Torstien had just got off the bus from Santiago and was in need of some real coffee, was a bad nights sleep on the bus. Claudio arranged adventure expeditions as well as serve coffee and told to us about a trip up the Volcano Calbuco the next day or the next day or even the next day. He was hoping we would bite and make him a wee bit of money. Fair enough, it was something I wanted to do and would be a unique way to spend the day. So we took the bait. Torsten met Mauldin in the hostel he was staying in and invited her to join us.

We set off for the Volcano at about 9am after a coffee at Claudio’s. The cloud level was fairly low but we hope it would lift. It didn’t but the landscape around us was stunning with ancient forests, waterfalls and a marine harvest hatchery at the bottom. We got to about 500meters from the summit and the others were getting a bit tired and pissed off that they couldn’t see anything for the cloud. And they weren’t too confident on the steeper parts, so we had to return. Ach well that was fine, we had made it way past Ben Nevis. I can feel it on my legs now. We all when out for dinner after, had seafood and wine.
The weather is totally crap now and I’m not looking forward to cycling in it. I think it is going to be rainy for days.
